Pärnu Art Summer is a festival with a history – it first took place in 1995, and in the years since, a large proportion of the greatest figures in Estonian art have taken part in it. Three years ago, two new exhibition series with a more international reach, ‘Woman & Woman’ and ‘Man & Man’, were born under the aegis of Art Summer. Curators Marian Kivila and Jan Leo Grau had the idea of bringing an exhibition format paralleling the body, beach and nude culture to the summer resort, offering different points of view on gender issues. ‘Man & Man’ and ‘Woman & Woman’ are not classical nude exhibitions – the selected artists open up about their interpretations of gender identity, trying to explain the different positions of men and women in modern society, each interpreting the characteristics of masculinity or femininity in their own way.
